East Meets West – Chinese I Ching and Psychotherapy

March 8, 2009

Why Do Professional Psychologists Turn to The Ancient Chinese I Ching?

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, has been around for thousands of years. The system of divination has been around for much longer than modern psychology. In fact, it was developed long before western science. But does an ancient book belong in the realm of fake science just because it is old?

What is I Ching?

I cannot attempt to explain everything, but most modern people are interested in the way you toss 3 coins 6 times. Each toss makes a line, and the order of your random coin throws will correspond to a hexagram, and with that coin toss you will make a pattern. Before you toss the coins you pose a question. And of course, it is always best to begin the qestion with please….

Before you dismiss this as all random, keep in mind that great minds from Confucious to Carl Jung studied I Ching and found relevance. In addition, the system of using coin flips to complete lines which completed a pattern actually inspired early development of binary numerical systems, which made computers possible!

Next – even modern psychologists in the 21st century find the tools amazingly accurate and worthwhile. Major universities even spend time teaching the ancient art to students, and some students go on to use it as a tool when they treat troubled people!

How Can I Ching Work?

The question of how random coin flips can provide any sort of Oracle may be beyond my scope of understanding. But even if you refuse to believe that any sort of force in the universe drives the flips, believe this – your own mind is very powerful. The interpretaton of the sage advice will come from your own prior analysis and intuition of the question.

Many times the prophecy ends by telling the querent that he or she, himself or herself, is what she has been seeking all along! Now that is sage advice!
