Is Eight Enough?
I am the parent of twins, so I am writing this article from the perspective of a parent of multiples. Of course, twins happen in nature. Mine did. Even, in rare cases, triplets happen in nature. We do have two arms, and two breasts, and it seems like our bodies were designed to take the unusual, but not unheard of birth of twins into account. But really all of that redundancy was probably just put into place to make sure we had backup for parenting one baby. And it is obvous that, while parenting twin babies is challenging, it can be nothing like being the parent of eight new babies. The point want to make is that even though I only expected one baby, when I found out I was having two babies, I wanted them both!
But even bearing twins was challenging. I had to leave my job early because the doctor put me on “house arrest”, and even though I was lucky enough to have 2 normal weight babies, I had to work very hard to accomplish that goal. I cannot imagine that any amount of effort would allow a woman to bring 8 normal weight babies into the world at the same time.
I cannot blame the so-called OctoMom for wanting all 8 babies. It is built into our genetic code, and it seems as if a mom’s blood screams for all babies to be born. But I cannot understand why a doctor would allow for such a possibility, with no concern that all 8 embryos would implant and the mom would not be able to end any of the pregnancies.
Who paid for all of this, anyway? So many children do not have access to proper food and care. Apparently, the mother already had 6 children who required public assistance. So how did she manage to have an expensive fertility treatment that other families decide they cannot afford?
Look, I get it. I understand how she could not just let potential life be unborn. It is, perhaps irrational, but it is human. But what was the doctor going for? Did he just want to see if he could do it? Doesn’t he have any responsiblity to draw a line?
