Why Write a Book?

You must have noticed that many public figures and enterprises use book publishing as a way to promote their business. It seems as if everybody from our current president to the latest business guru has done this. Beyond using a book as a tool to promote business, other people just want to express themselves. I have rarely met anybody, especially anybody who likes to read, who does not have a desire to write!

Lucky for us, it is probably easier to get published now than it ever was in the past. For one thing, books can be published online. How does that help? Well, online books are much cheaper to publish, can be printed off in small quantities if needed, and so the idea is very attractive to people who do not know how to get a book accepted by a traditional publishing company.

Ways to Get A Book Published:

Traditional Publishing - Here you send your manuscript to a book publisher or an agent. You hope to have somebody pick up your book and and do printing and marketing. This is probably the most common idea about how books get published. But it can be a long and agonizing process, and there is no guaranee your book will ever make it on the book store shelves even if it does get published.

Traditional Self-Publishing – You can pay to print your own book. If you plan to use the book as a tool in your business, this is not a bad idea. Professional speakers, for instance, may have a book to sell after the program. Or they may even give it away to support the program. Hopefully it will get read, add content, and perhaps even get passed around to promote the speaker’s business.

Online Self Publishing – I am, or course, a big fan of online publishing. It is cheap for one thing. For another, you can actually charge more money for less content, and also make a larger profit for online e-books. If you choose to give it away to promote your business,  you do not have to carry around hundreds of pounds worth of hard bound books. You can simply print a short summary, and then direct your clients to your online book!

In addition, you can find companies – like Amazon – who will list your online work, and then print or bind one copy at a time for hard copy sales. Aren’t computers great?

Combination Publishing – These days many authors start out publishing online, and then actually get approached by traditional publishers after they have some fans. Or they can accept a publisher’s deal, but retain the rights to use their work online.

When it comes to book publishing in the 21st century, you can have it all!
