Comparing Medicare Health Insurance Plans
Do You Understand Medicare Health Insurance?
If you are one of the millions of Medicare beneficiaries in the United States, you have more options today than you ever did. This is good news, in a way, because everybody has unique health needs, budgets, and comfort levels. However, it also makes the selection of the best Medicare health plan more complex!
We want to help you compare supplemental Medicare health insurance by explaining the basics of Medicare.
Original Medicare Part A and Part B
Part A and Part B are original Medicare plans, and they are designed to help seniors and disabled people pay for part of their health costs. However, these plans include deductibles, limits, and copayments, so they will not end all out-of-pocket health costs.
Medicare Supplements Cover the “GAP”
Medicare supplements come from private insurance companies. Sometimes they are called medi-gap plans because they cover some of the coverage “gaps” that original Medicare has. They work with original Medicare, and also have different levels that cover different things. Of course, the premium will vary by where a person lives, the level of coverage, and sometimes by age and health.
Medicare Advantage (PART C) Bundles Health Coverage
Medicare Advantage plans also come from private insurers, but they are different than Medi-gap plans. They bundle the coverage of original Medicare with other services, so they provide more complete coverage. They are very popular now because they are fairly simple to use, and many come with little, or no, additional premium.
Medicare Drug Plans (Part D)
Medicare prescription plans are the newest Medicare plan, and they were designed to cover drug costs. Sometimes these plans are also called Medicare part D. Again, they will not totally eliminate drug costs, and they do come in different levels for different amounts of coverage. Sometimes they are purchased alone, and sometimes PART D comes bundled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
