Both of these questions seem compex, and even, a bit scary. There do not seem to be any magic numbers or magic answers.
It is hard to know how much money a person will need for a comfortable retirement. Things may cost more in the future. We do not know what changes will happen to government retirement and heath programs. But you can visit a financial advisor or use online retirement calculators to help you find get some general target goals for savings.
Most of us can do more to save for retirement, but there are limits to what we can put away now and still attend to our present needs.
You Maybe Be Better Off Than You Thought
It pays to be a bit optimistic sometimes, so I hope to give you some hope. You probably have more assets that can help you enjoy a comfortable retirement than you are counting right now.
Look at one common example. If you have equity in a home that you purchased to raise a family in, that is an asset. When kids are grown, you may not need as large of a house, so you may downsize your living arrangements. In this case, you may be able to take your home equity and add it to your retirement savings. There are also other ways to use your home ot help you retire.
Do you have a life insurance policy? If your policy and you qualify, you may take a senior life settlement which will pay you cash for benefits that you do not need.
