Steps to Get Your VA Certificate of Eligibility

August 24, 2009
By

Getting your VA certificate of eligibility will enable you to apply for a VA loan.  The U.S. Veteran’s Administration is the responsible agency that issue certificates of eligibility.  You need to apply directly to the VA in order to get your certificate.  You can also utilize the online web service of the VA called automated certificate of eligibility or ACE.  This web based tool can issue your eligibility certificate within seconds.  If you are comfortable with online utilities, then the ACE service is your best option.  However, you also have the option to mail your request to the VA for your eligibility certificate.

There are a number of reasons why you will need a VA certificate of eligibility.  That is why you should ensure that this document is always available and handy.  You must immediately request for a replacement copy in case you lost your original eligibility certificate.  Your certificate of eligibility will be needed so you can qualify for the home loan benefit.  A VA CE is also needed if you will file a request to restore your full veteran benefits especially after you have paid in full your existing VA home loans.  And if you want to refinance your VA home loan through the VA streamline program, then your eligibility certificate will be required from you.  Because your certificate is a proof that you have rendered valuable service in the military, you can easily qualify for loans and benefits intended for U.S. veterans.

The steps in getting your VA certificate of eligibility are not complicated.  In fact, your mortgage lender can acquire your eligibility certificate using the automated process of ACE.  Your lender therefore can have your certificate within seconds as long as your data and service records at the VA are complete and in order.  If your service record is incomplete or the VA does not have enough data on your service records, then you should manually apply for a certificate of eligibility by sending a request directly to the office of the Veteran Administration.  Make sure that you can mail the request to the right processing center of the Veterans Administration.  The address of the VA processing center can be found on the VA website.

You have to correctly complete and fill-up the VA Form 26-1880.  This is the official request form for your VA certificate of eligibility.  After filling up the form, it would be best if you can attach or include in your request any supporting document such as your discharge papers or other pertinent papers that the VA requires.  If you have an existing VA loan, attaching additional documents may not be needed.  However, if you want to avoid delays and glitches in the processing of your certificate, it would be best to include the photocopied requirements to your letter request form.

You can get your certificate within 10 days after you mailing your request to the VA processing center.  However, this is only the average waiting period.  If there are lots of applications that are being processed by the agency, then the waiting period can be longer.
