Pet Safety – Chocolate and Dogs
Here are commons foods that you should avoid feeding your dog:
Raisins – Scientists do not know why raisins, and the grapes they are made from, are bad for pets, but they do know this fruit that is so beneficial to humans, causes kidney failure in animals. Especially vulnerable are animals who already have health problems. Symptoms to watch for; vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, agitation and hyperactivity, lethargy and depression.
Macadamia nuts - Symptoms to watch for: weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, overheating. Even nontoxic nuts contain fats that can cause vomiting and diarrhea if your pet eats too many, and the salt on nuts can be dangerous in large quantities.
Chocolate – The darker the chocolate the more toxic for your pet. It takes only two ounces of baking chocolate or 20 ounces of milk chocolate to seriously sicken or even kill a 10 pound dog. Symptoms to watch for: vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal hear rhythm tremors, seizures.
Yeast dough - Raw dough can rise inside your pet’s warm digestive system and can cause gas to build up, causing pain or even rupturing his stomach or intestines. Symptoms to watch for: abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, disorientation and depression.
Artificial sweeteners - Xylitol, which is common in candy and many other sugar-free products can trigger a release of insulin, which can lower sugar levels and lead to liver failure. Xylitol is also present in breath mints strips. People sometimes mistakenly give these strips or breath mints to their dog in an attempt to remedy bad breath. There are other solutions to doggie bad breath. Don’t give your dog one of these strips to chew to freshen their breath – the strips or mints are toxic to your pet. Symptoms to watch for: vomiting, lethargy, loss of coordination, seizures.
