Pet Pool Safety
Swimming Pool Safety
We are all concerned that our children be safe around swimming pools but don’t forget about your pets. Here are some water-safety tips from the American Kennel Club and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Provide shade – Dogs, especially short-haired dogs and ones with pink skin and white hair are more likely to get sunburned.
Limit exposure when the sun is strong – You should apply sunblock for canines to the ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside.
Don’t leave your dog alone in the pool – Something could happen and your pet may need to help him/her get out of the water.
Don’t toss your dog into the water or let your dog jump into deep water in a pool or lake – A dog can panic and possibly drown.
Dry out your dog’s ears – Just like children dog’s can get an ear infection if the inside of their ears remains moist. You can also use a preventative treatment for ear infection called
PetAlive Ear Dr. for Ear Infections and Ear Mites.
Have a secure fence – Make sure your pool is securely fenced off or covered with a sturdy pool cover when not in use. Do no leave your dog alone around an uncovered pool.
Have graded steps – Graded steps will let dogs and children have a way out of the water. Dogs and toddlers cannot climb ladders. You can not assume that your dog will automatically understand where the steps are located and how to use them to get out of the pool. You have to train i.e. show your pet several times to make sure they know what to do.
