February is Pet Dental Month. The American Animal Hospital Association and many other animal care related groups tell us we should brush our dog or cat’s teeth every day if we can.
Here is a quick summary on how to brush your dog’s or cat’s teeth:
1. Start a brushing program for your pet gradually. Don’t over-restrain your pet and only brush for a short time in the beginning. A cat or small dog can be held in your lap. Make sure you praise your pet and are reassuring during the brushing. You might even spray them with a little orange blossom water to reduce anxiety.
2. When you are just beginning brushing wet your finger with beef bouillon for dogs or tuna water for cats. Rub your dipped finger softly over the pet’s mouth and teeth. Make the beginning tooth brushing time short and not stressful for your pet.
3. Work up to using a piece of gauze over the finger and gently scrub the teeth in a circular motion.
4. When your pet is comfortable, you can use a soft toothbrush. Get a toothbrush that is for people with sensitive teeth or ultrasoft brush. Check your pet store or vet’s office for a brush designed for pets. Don’t use toothpaste made for people or baking soda because it could upset the animal’s stomach. Brushing your pet’s teeth should only take a minute or two.
