Car Sick Pets
Generally when your dog or cat gets sick in the car, it is usually due to stress and anxiety. Though also, according to veterinarians, riding in the car can stimulate the vomiting center in the brain. Here are some tips from holistic veterinarians to keep your pet from becoming one of those car sick pets:
Make your car environment “fun” – Vets say that cars are loud and strange to pets and they take them “bad” places like the vet. So it’s no wonder pets get anxious when they see the car especially if they have already been sick in one. Put some of your pets favorite things in the car – toys, blankets, and maybe a few treats. Don’t go anywhere the first few times, just let your pet play in the car for a bit. Your pet will learn the car is “fun” and not scary.
Give ginger – You can use capsules sold in health food stores that are for people. Use 500 milligrams for dogs 15 pounds and over and smaller pets can take half that amount. Open the capsule and sprinkle the contents over a blob of peanut butter (or something your pet enjoys eating). Do this 20 minutes before the drive. Cats may not eat ginger so you may need to prepare a tea – one teaspoon of fresh grated ginger to a cup of hot water. Let it cool, strain it and add a drop of honey. Use an eye dropper to squirt an eye dropperful in the corner of your cats mouth.
