Make Your Own Cleaning Products
Everyone is looking for ways to save money these days. I have noticed that when I have to buy cleaning products my grocery bill really increases. I have found some great homemade recipes for laundry products. Graham and Rosemary Haley authors of Haley’s Hints have a ton of money saving ideas. Here are some their recipes for laundry products.
Homemade Cleaning Products
Cleaning solution for delicates – Take 1 and 1/2 cups of bran (you can find bran in the health food section of your grocery store or where they have those bulk bins) and tie it up in a piece of cotton cloth (an old bandana or something). Put it in a pan with a quart of water and bring to a boil. Let simmer for 30 minutes and then strain it. Add two cups warm water and stir it all up. Your now have a good cleaning solution which will preserve the color and shape of those delicate items. Because of the fiber there is no need to add any starch.
Setting colors in new garments – To set the colors in new cottons and keep the color bright, soak them overnight in lightly salted water, or a weak solution of vinegar and water.
Keep your colored clothes brighter – Add 1/3 cup white vinegar to your rinse cycle and your clothes will come out brighter and softer. The vinegar smell will go away when clothes have dried. You can also use cream of tarter which is gentler on fabrics than many “safe for color bleaches” are. Mix 2 teaspoons cream of tarter in one gallon of hot water and leave clothes to soak overnight. Just do this right in your in washing machine and the next day wash as usual.
