Good Cheap Wine
Best Cheap Wine
Everyone talks about frugal meals and how to have a meal for your family for $5.00 or less. But no one ever mentions frugal wine. We used to have a great column in our paper called “Cheap Wine Without Guilt” which gave wonderful recommendations.
Here is a list of five wines which can be purchased for $5.00 or less. These were recommended by a manager from a large retail outlet specializing in alcoholic beverages:
Levata Lambrusco 2006
Gallo Twin Valley Hearty Burgundy
Stony Hollow Cabernet Sauvignon
Stony Hollow Chardonnay
Vendange Sauvignon Blanc
Brands I have tried and liked which are less than $10.00 are:
Glen Ellen
Lindemans – Shiraz
Yellow Tail
Columbia Crest
Monkey Bay – Sauvignon Blanc is great
LLano and Messina Hof (Texas Wines)
You can find more inexpensive wines by asking the salespeople at your local liquor store. Often, if you give them your price range, they will have recommendations for you. If you belong to COSTCO, they will often list the Wine Spectators grade for wines on a placard above the bin. A friend of mine had a great system for choosing wine – the wine had to be under $20 and the Wine Spectator grade had to be 90 points or above. I found her system to be very effective for finding good wine.
