Health Benefits of Apples
Apples are cheap and always available at your grocery store. In addition to being delicious they really are good for you. For instance:
French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.
Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.
Other studies have shown that individuals who ate apples on a regular basis cut their lung cancer risk in half. lowered their risk for stroke, reduced the growth of colon cancer and liver cancer cells with just two-thirds of a medium apple a day.
Here are some easy ways to work apples into your diet:
1. Cut small cubes of apples and celery, then combine with walnut pieces. Mix in mayonnaise and add chopped parsley, salt, and pepper to taste. Leave the skin on the apples because most of the fiber and antioxidants are in the peel.
2. Slice apple in half and cut out the core. Spread peanut butter on each apple half. If you need more sweet, drizzle a little honey on top.
3. Instead of lettuce, thinly slice apple on a turkey or ham sandwich. Top with mayonnaise or honey mustard.
4. Cut small cubes of apples, drizzle with maple syrup and add them to your oatmeal.
5. Substitute chopped apple for chopped celery in tuna salad.
