Your Prom – Tips

Here is some good advice from an article that appeared in our local paper for those of you who are doing the asking:

Be original – If you just do it in the traditional way it seems like you didn’t put much thought into it. One guy made up a scavenger hunt for his potential date. You probably don’t have to be that elaborate but be creative in your approach.

Try an inside joke – In the article a guy said he threw rocks at his girlfriends window and then held up a sign with an inside joke from their favorite TV show. The sign was a poster board with the words “Worlds Best Prom Date.” Again, be creative but maybe not as potentially destructive as this guy.

Say it with pictures – One high school senior put together a slide show of his date with her favorite song. One the last slide, with a photo of the two of them he added the text, “It is a prom story, baby. Just say yes.”

After you’ve got your date:

Be a smart date – Discuss what group you are going with beforehand so you both have a friend who will be in the same dinner and after-prom plans. You want your date to feel comfortable and not left out of the dinner conversation.

Who pays? – If the guy asks the girl, he should pay say some students surveyed in the article. Other students say it should be more of a compromise. I think if the guy is really struggling to pay and the girl is able she should offer to help out but that’s just me. Students in the article said if you are going as just friends split it down the middle. If your date is your girlfriend, offer to pay for everything.

Get flowers – Get a boutonniere for your guy unless he tells you not to. If your are not comfortable with a corsage tell your date in advance so he doesn’t waste his money.

Dancing – Though you shouldn’t be confined to your date the whole evening and it is acceptable to dance with others, dance with your date for at least one slow and one fast song. Don’t your date alone, searching for you on the dance floor the whole night.

Be flexible – Plan ahead, but be prepared to compromise with your date.

Be prepared – Take a stain removal pen in your evening bag. If something happens you can do damage control and won’t have to worry about ruined formal wear all evening.
