Is Dating After a Divorce a Good Idea?

I think you are the one who knows when you are ready to start dating after a break up or divorce. Of course, people with kids and / or a long marriage will probably take longer than younger people without kiddies around. I read an interesting article on over 50 dating that made me consider some of the best tips I ever got for getting into dating after a divorce.

Rule 1: Take it Easy – Every person you date does not have to be “the one”.  Try to keep your relationships light until you are very sure you really like the other person, and are not just using him or her to get past the ex. If you find yourself dating people that remind you of your ex, make sure you ponder that. This is a great time to break patterns that did not work out that well.

Rule 2: Do what you love!

 Find an you enjoy that does not have to center around any sort of singles scene. If you like to dance, ride a motorcycle, or discuss books, why not find a club or class that will allow you to endulge yourself. Activities that draw people who enjoy some things that you enjoy will be great places to meet friends, and of course, potential dates.

Rule 3: Leave Therapy to a Therapist

C’mon, nobody is going to want to date you if all you do is dump about your awful life and sob ex the whole time. Its probably ok to vent a litte, and of course later in the relationship you probably want to be honest about the problems in your marriage or last relationship. But go out and have a good time, try to experience a new moment, and leave the therapy sessions in the therapist’s office.
