Effects of Lack of Sleep and Weight Loss

Did you know that a recent study by researchers from the University of Warwick Medical School in Coventry, England found that every lost hour of sleep is associated with a discrete increase in BMI (body mass index, the formula that calculates how overweight you are based on your weight and height)?

Apparently, scientists have not been to find how sleep and weight loss are related but they have established there is a relationship. How much sleep do you need? Here is a table from the The National Sleep Foundation:

Toddlers – 12 to 14 hours
Preschoolers – 11 to 13 hours
School age children – 10 to 11 hours
Adolescents – 9 to 10 hours
Adults – 7 to 9 hours

Lack of sleep can be responsible for increases in other illnesses too. Studies have shown that you are three times more likely to get a cold if you sleep less than seven hours a night. People who get less sleep have been found to be more likely to develop plaque in their arteries of their hearts early in life.

You can see how important it is for everyone in your family to get their sleep. Often though we have trouble getting to sleep. Events in our lives throw off our sleep cycle and we simply can’t sleep.

There are several herbal remedies you can use to help you sleep. Chamomile Tea with Valerian is sold in local grocery stores and health food stores. It is inexpensive and you can control the dosage by using more or fewer tea bags. For small children just use plain Chamomile Tea sweetened with honey. You can also use Lavender Essential Oil or Lavender scented candles or incense to help you relax before bedtime.
