Colon Cancer and The Role of Fiber

Colorectal cancer has been in the news a great deal. The statistic most often quoted is the one that says colon cancer accounts for roughly 13 percent of all cancers and is considered the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Fortunately, colon cancer may be preventable through diet. According to M. Sarah Rosenthal author of 50 Ways To Prevent Colon Cancer, “Of all the studies done on cancer and dietary fat, the strongest connections can be made between high fat diets and colon cancer. It has been shown though that people who consume large quantities of fiber have lower rates of colon cancer. Studies also show that the number of calories you consume on a daily basis-regardless of whether they are fat or fiber-can also increase the risk of colon cancer.”

I think that study result makes sense. If you consume more calories than your system needs it probably puts extra stress on your digestive system causing it to weaken and become more vulnerable to disease.

There are actually two types of fiber – insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Good sources of soluble fiber include oats or oat bran, legumes (dried beans, peas and soybeans), some seeds, carrots, oranges, bananas, and other fruits. Good sources of insoluble fiber are wheat bran, whole grains, skins from various fruits and vegetables, seeds, leafy greens, and cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, and brussels sprouts).

Sometimes people have difficulty understanding what is truly “whole grain.” Many people think because a bread is dark or brown color it’s more nutritious. Actually, many brown breads are simply enriched white breads dyed with molasses. “Enriched” means according Dr. Mehmet Oz, some good stuff has been put back in because all the nutrients were taken out during processing.
Dr. Oz is right, so look for the phrase “whole wheat” which means that the wheat is whole and not just white bread with coloring.
