Attention Span Research
Do you have trouble keeping your mind focused? I find my mind wandering all the time as I go about my daily tasks. Sometimes it is so bad I forget what I am doing. I’m sure you know the feeling – you walk into the room and forget what you came in there for. But there is hope for us chronic short attention span folks. According to Winifred Gallagher author of Rapt, “When you learn how to actively use your attention, your whole world opens up.”:Here are four suggestions from Winifred Gallegher:
Learn to look – Spend a minute observing the colors and textures of something around you, like a tree of a painting. This exercise helps teach you to control your attention. Gallagher says, over time, you’ll be able to translate this skill to push aside nagging thoughts in favor of an activity or idea that inspires you and brings you joy.
Search for the positive - If focus on one aspect of the situation others are easy to ignore. Instead of complaining on the next rainy day, change your thinking by noticing how green everything appears around you. Your mood will be better, and you may actually discover something fun to do – like splashing in puddles.
Do things differently - Gallagher says “Trying something new automatically causes you to pay very active attention.” Test a new recipe or go a different way home from work. You will feel energized and gain a renewed sense of focus.
Divide your to-do-list – Instead of multi-tasking Gallagher recommends setting aside a block of time to work on one. Time management studies support this conclusion that single tasking is more efficient than multi-tasking. Single tasking helps you feel a sense of control and creates an “in the zone” feeling.
