What Are Probiotics

Probiotics are in the news quite a bit and you will see products at your store advertising they contain probiotics. Probiotics are important to the development of the immune system. They help shield you against microorganisms that could cause disease. Probiotics help with digestion and absorption of food and nutrients. An interesting fact about probiotics is that each person’s mix of bacteria is different. The interaction between a person and the microorganisms in their body, and among the microorganisms themselves, can determine whether a person is healthy or sick.

This important balance of bacteria can be unbalanced in two ways:

Use of Antibiotics – Antibiotics can kill good bacteria in your gut along with the unfriendly bacteria it is designed to eliminate. The situation is similar to when you use a pesticide to get rid of bad bugs but you kill the good ones too.

When you take antibiotics, the flora in your gastrointestinal tract can get out of balance and lead to diarrhea, dehydration and mineral-salt imbalance, particularly among small children. When you consume probiotics the “good” bacteria is put back in your system. Your digestive tract contains some 400 species of bacteria, totaling some 100 billion organisms so replacing the good bacteria is a big task. Helpful probiotics (such as Lactobacillus and Bifidus) enable the body to defend against the sanitizing effects of antibiotic therapy. Recent scientific studies have supported this information.

Recent medical research shows some “20 to 40 percent of all children prescribed broad-spectrum antibiotics develop diarrhea. A University of Nebraska study of 188 children between six months and 10 years of age found supplementation with 10 billion colony-forming units of Lactobacillus casei per day reduced the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 75 percent after 10 days”.

Bad microorganisms – These are damaging microorganisms such as yeast, fungi, and parasites that can also destroy the bacteria balance. Researchers are currently looking at whether probiotics could stop these bad bacteria in the first place and/or suppress their growth and activity in conditions like infectious diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, tooth decay and periodontal disease, vaginal infections, stomach and respiratory infections and skin infections.
