After the recession, a great many laid off workers and professional had a really rough ride. It was very hard to find and keep a good new job. From what I see on the TV news, the employment figures look somewhat more promising for a few groups of people. But if you sit down and look at the figures, this job market is still hard on the unemployed over 55.

Why Are Workers Over 55 Having A Harder Time Finding A New Job?

It seems like people who have worked for decades, and have lots of skills and experience, should not be having such a hard time! But younger workers seem to be able to get back to work a lot quicker.

It may be that younger people have more current job skills, and that is what today’s employers want. They may even be less choosy about a new job. Some hiring authorities might even have some bias against hiring employees who are older than they are. Lots of older job seekers claim that this is true. They even have a name for it. They call it the gray wall.

Long Term Unemployment For Older People

People who have been out of work for over a year are considered the long term unemployed. If you take all of the people over fifty-five, who are unemployed, over forty percent have been out of work for longer than a year.

There are several serious problems for people who have been out of work a long time. They may lose their edge when it comes to having current job skills. Technology changes so quickly these days that a year can be a very long time. In many cases, a person’s confidence and mood also suffer when they cannot find a new job quickly. Finally, this situation has got to be tough on people’s retirement savings. They may be depleting their retirement funds in order to live, and they probably are not adding new funds if they have no income.

Many of us still hold onto our dream of the day we can retire. A few people even hang onto a the hope of retiring early. But when we really look into that dream, we find that there are some problems that are not easy to dismiss.

What are some big problems with early retirement?

I hate to rain on anybody’s parade, but let us look into some of the issues to see if we can still have a realistic opportunity to check out before the normal retirement age. All may not be loss though. If you have been able to build up your retirement income, have benefits, and can live comfortably without work, you may be able to leave your office behind.

Having a comfortable retirement income is one of the biggest problems. We do not know how long we will live. We cannot predict how long our money needs to last. You may have some guaranteed income from social security and pensions. Otherwise, you will have to live on your savings. Most of us do not estimate the amount of money we will need very well..

An easy answer is to reduce your standard of living. Do you still occupy the big house you purchased for your family? Maybe this is a good time to decide if the expense is still worth the expense and trouble. You really do not need to pay for all of the upkeep, taxes, and repairs just so you can keep an empty bedroom when the grandchildren come to visit twice a year. Even if you have to pay for a hotel room, when they visit, you may be better off financially.

Retirement health insurance is another big problem. What if you decide to retire at fifty-five, but still will not get Medicare benefits until you are sixty-five? Some companies allow retirees to stay on company health plans. Many do not. You may need to address this issue. There is a solution that may help you get decent medical insurance and increase your income a bit.

You may want to leave your current job for a variety of reasons. What about getting an easier job? You should be able to find something that provides you with an income and gives you a health plan. Many people have found that taking contract or part time work is a good balance between leaving a very demanding job and quitting work all together.

Should you retire early? Only you can make the right decision. Your current savings, benefits, and income will be your guides. I hope you make it.

————————

Do you have to change jobs in midlife? This can be a very stressful experience for many middle aged people. It is tough enough at 30, and it is usually a lot tougher at 40 or 55!

But many older workers have been forced out of their past jobs, and may actually have to change careers in order to find employment. Consider some tips to make the transition as quick and painless as possible.

It is very important to be realistic about a midlife career change. This may be a hard time to go after a totally different type of job. At 55, you may not be able or willing to return to school for several years in order to get an advanced degree. As an experienced employee, you probably have a lot of talents and skills you can take to your new job. On the other hand, you may have a lot of financial obligations and you must make money fast.

What Opportunities Are Open To Older Workers?

What sort of career changes could you manage without having to sacrifice a big investment in retraining? Can you find something that does use a lot ofyour past experiences?

For example, I know a lot of technical workers who have turned to teaching. Quote a few former teachers found that they could learn to be good managers. If you teacher can manage a classroom of unruly middle school aged students, she should have no trouble supervising adult workers!

Your task will be to convincce hiring managers that your past skills and experience will enable you to perform a new job well. One thing you may need to accomplish, before you can even speak to a hiring manager, is to produce an updated resume and cover letter. Hiring managers look for different things than they did several years ago. You probably need to update your resume building skills. This is particularly true if you have not looked for a job for decades.

To find a good job quickly, you should also sharpen your networking skills. Large job websites and old fashioned recruiters may not be the best thing for you. Finding a job through people you know is usually the fastest, least painful, and most efficient route. You do not have to go out and meet a lot of new people in person to do this. You may have good luck with online social networking. These websites can help you expand your network quickly. If you let your offline and online friends know that you are job hunting, they can be a great resource. Learn how to use LinkedIn, for example.

It is not impossible to make a midlife career change. If you have a lot of obligations, you probably need to approach your job search with a realistic attitude.

Do you need to find a new job, or even a new career, after you have already entered mid life? There is little doubt that it can be a lot more challenging for a middle aged person to switch jobs and careers. There are several reasons for this. A lot of new jobs require updated training or relocation. This can be a lot harder on an older person who already has a lot of obligations. This hardly means that changing jobs, after age fifty, is impossible though! We even got inspired by some news about $100,000 jobs that do not require a degree. If you want to make 6 figures, or if you would be happy living on $30,000, you probably still need to keep some things in mind though. Have you been downsized from a job you held for many years? Are you just burnt out, and wish you could figure out how to find another type of job? Both cases still seem to happen a lot these days. Some older workers get cut from their jobs, and they need to seek other employment. Others have jobs, but wish they could make a career change. The type of job that seemed satisfying at a [...]

The type of job that seemed satisfying at a younger age, is just not the right fit any longer.

It is no secret that older people have a harder time making the transition to a new job. They carry some baggage, and this baggage can cause some problems with new employers.

If you are already past fifty, you probably have some family obligations. This may make it a lot harder for you to be flexible when seeking a new job. This is one big disadvantage. These older folks need to stay in a certain city, and they need to make a certain salary. A younger person may be a lot more open to relocation and a lower salary. They have more time, so it is easier for them to start over. Of course, the more flexible you can be, the easier time you will have landing a new opportunity.

Younger workers, right out of school, may already have current training. Older people have probably been performing the same basic duties for decades. Younger people may pick up new job skills in school, while older people really have to put some effort into retraining. A lot of older people have done the same job for many years. Very often, employers are looking for workers with updated skill sets.

Of course, there may be open jobs in your area. You may already have the right skills to perform these duties. In this case, some job seekers have problems getting in the door because they use outdated resumes or job hunting tactics. Younger workers may have a better understanding of the current market.

How can you adress these problems so you can switch jobs in mid-line? You have to figure out what things are the most important to you, and what things are hurting your job hunting efforts the most.

Can you relocate, and can you accept a lower salary? If you cannot relocate, could you accept a longer commute or find a job that allows you to work from a home office? This will certainly make it easier to switch jobs.

If you lack some current skills, is there an easy way to get some current training? There are lots of online classes. Local community colleges also offer career based classes at affordable prices. If you know which skills you lack, you probably can figure out how to gain them.

There are still jobs out there for older workers. You may have to be flexibile, and you may have to do the work to fill in the gaps in your training or experience though.

Ever work as a temp? If you answered yes, you might believe that the work that temps do is not exactly fun or even a good match to your interests. Most of the time you’ll think that such a situation is “okay” because the work, after all, is temporary. At www.goworkit.com, however, you’ll be able to find temporary work that is not just interesting and fun, but which is also ideally matched to your interests.

Currently, the site offers up free listings for cool jobs available in the New York City area, and it provides all of the details entirely for free. This means that, unlike a lot of job search sites, this one gives you everything you need in order to get a dream temp job, and without charging one penny!

A Two-Way Street to Employment

The site works in two ways and allows employers to submit their listings too. This means that temporary workers submit their details to an employer via the Web or even through a text message, and the employer can decide whether or not to hire them instantly!

The site lets an employer list the job type, the wage, the location, the number of empty spots, and when they need the person to work. There is also a way of seeking permanent workers. The employer can list their cell number to speed up the entire process too!

Clearly, this site provides a good all-around solution for workers and employers alike, and it takes only moments for either group to submit the information and to get the results they want. Let’s take a quick look at the ways that workers go about finding their temp jobs through the site.

The Categories of Work for Temps

Just consider that you’ll be able to select from a range of “with” and/or “in” categories in order to find the jobs available to temps through the site. For example, you might want to work specifically “with” food or “in” fun places, and the site makes it easy to obtain all of the current listings under such headings.

What other types of work are available? You can work with people, kids, food, your hands, your heart, in fun places, in the office or outside! Each of these categories or headings has a long list of more specific forms of employment from which to choose.

For instance, in the “with my heart” category you will find jobs as clowns, caregivers, survey participants, volunteers, or fund raisers. The “in fun places” group includes party planning, theme park, spa resort, and life guard jobs among many others.

No Obligation

Once you have submitted your list of interests, the site sends back the listings currently available. You should know that you only have to take a job if you have an interest in it, or if it seems like a lot of fun to you. There are no obligations to even reply to the options forwarded to you, and you can look around as often as you’d like!

Will working be part of your retirement? It may seem like retirement and working are two things that do not go together. However, most older workers say they do not plan to completely retire. They plan to either continue in their current profession or take up another kind of retirement employment.

For many people approaching the traditional retirement age, the thought of leaving all work behind them is out of the question. There are many reasons for this new trend.

The first reason is very practical. The older people worry that they do not have enough money to have a comfortable retirement. They may not have been able to save enough in the past. Lots of them did try to save.

Economic problems or unemployment may have reduced those savings and investment accounts. Children did not get out of the house as quickly as planned. Sometimes grown children have been returning to their parents, and some of these grown children bring back their own children with them. Older workers figure they will have to work a few more years in order to provide security for their families and themselves.

In addition, they worry about rising costs. What seems like plenty of money now may not seem like enough money in the future. The costs of food, energy, and Medicare health plans has been rising.

Sometimes there is plenty of money. However, these older people still feel healthy and productive. Working has been an important part of their lives, and they do not want to leave it behind yet. They see no reason to quit working just because they celebrate another birthday milestone. These people have no plans to retire.

Many do plan to leave their current job or occupation at some point. They want to explore other jobs, work part time at a less demanding job, or start a retirement business. Some plan to turn a part time business or hobby into a full time business when they leave their current job. You may wonder if retirement is a good time to start over in a new enterprise. However, for many older peope, there will never be a better time to realize an ambition.

There are actually quite a few self employment opportunities for people who want more flexible schedules. Some of these do not take a long time to train for or a lot of money to start. In most states, you can become an insurance agent by passing an exam. You can prepare for this exam by taking a short course over a few evenings or a week-end. You can also train to do book keeping in a few weeks. There are even many online classes you can take to prepare. This professions can be done on a full or part time basis, require a fairly low initial investment, and can be performed out of a home office.

You may already have the skills you need for your ideal retirement job. Tutors can get paid very well, for example. If you like to teach, and have the skills to help kids understand a particular subject, you may consider becoming a tutor in the afternoon, early evening, or on week-ends.

Lots of older workers make retirement plans, but these plans do not incude total retirement. This may be the perfect time to quit your “day job” and explore other opportunities.

————————

Entry level positions are hard to come by when working in a foreign country as most companies would prefer to pay the local employee the countries acceptable pay rate (Which, to you or me is close to nothing!). Although living conditions can be a little different from what you would normally expect from back home most people expats learn to appreciate the way of life from what they are used to. Most developing countries are a lot more relaxed than normal hustle and bustle of developed countries and there seems to be a lot less red tape.

There is an ever growing demand for engineering jobs in oil and gas. As the industry diversifies, so does its demand for what they expect from there engineers. New positions are created on a regular basis. Developing countries and countries now tapping into their natural reserve are looking to the expertise of engineers to help in the development of new plants the world over. Australia oil and gas jobs have grown tenfold over the last years and even countries like China look to the help of the oil and gas engineer.

Due to the world demand for cleaner fuels the industry has now had to employ engineers from environment and green backgrounds. As the industry moves forward so it creates new jobs and being qualified as an engineer will almost definitely find you in regular employment.
