Are Medicare Advantage Good For You?

Today, US senior citizens get lots of different decisions to make about Medicare plans. Having a lot of choices can be great. Sometimes they can also be confusing. One very popular plan, today, is called Medicare Advantage. Take a little time to clear up some of the confusion about these plans so you know if they are good for you.

First, Understand Medicare Advantage!

Do you understand Medicare Advantage plans?

These plans have provided a way for millions of Americans to reduce their health care and health plan costs. They have been around since the late 1990′s. Yet many people are confused about them, and there is a lot of misinformation being spread around.

The government created these plans as a way for beneficiaries to get their health coverage from a private insurance company. This was intended to give people more choices. In fact, the original name for these plans was Medicare Plus Choice. Some people also call them Part C plans.

So, you have a choice. You may choose to rely upon the original plan. You may even get a Medicare supplement to supplement original Medicare. Medicare supplements actually work with original Medicare. As an alternative to this, you may decide to enroll in an Advantage plan. You should compare Medicare health plans in order to make the right choice.

When you belong to an Advantage plan, you will get your coverage from the insurer. Instead of handing a doctor or hospital your Medicare card, you will show them your card from the private insurer. You do not lose your Medicare coverage though. In fact, you are free to dis-enroll and return to the older plan. You are also still protected by all of the laws, rules, and regulations of the Center For Medicaid and Medicare (CMS).

These plans must provide a level of coverage that is equal to, or better than, the original plan. However, the coverage is not always the same. Even though these newer plans help millions of people save money on premiums and out of pocket costs, they do not work out the best for every person. Each beneficiary has their own unique health needs and situation. You should examine the plan, and then make sure it works well for you.

Many MA plans have a network of medical service providers. Sometimes, you must use these network providers in order to get services covered. With other plans, you may choose to leave the network, but you may have to pay more for yoru services. When you see that your own favorite doctors are already on the plan, you may be more satisfied with the network. If you would rather have more freedom to pick and choose doctors, you may not be happy with the plan. This is actually quite similar to the way PPO or HMO plans work on regular health insurance policies.

Is an MA plan right for you? I do not have one perfect answer for every person. You must study the plans in your local area, consider how they work, and determine your own budget. That way, you can choose the right way to get your Medicare benefits!

What Are Important Medicare Dates For 2011 – 2012?

Do you get Medicare benefits? This is the federal health plan for millions of US senior citizens and retired people. If you are on this plan, or help take care of somebody who is on the plan, then you should keep track of some important Medicare dates. You should get notified about these dates, or you can find them on the official website.

Open Enrollment Date Changes

The open enrollment period will not be as long as it has been in the past. This gives you less time to act. However, you should have gotten plenty of notice about this change. One advantage is that an earlier close date will give companies more time to get enrollment cards in the hands of people who need them!

This period mostly affects people with Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription plans.

If you are fairly new to the plan, or if you have not studied it recently, you should take some time to understand your options. Beneficiaries do have a lot of choices. But there are times when too many choices can be more confusing.

You may want to compare Medicare supplement quotes to see if one plan provides a better value and price level for you. These supplemental plans are standardized, but companies do charge different amounts for coverage.

Should You Consider Buying Burial Insurance?
Have you ever had to plan a funeral?

Everybody hates the thought of of a loved one passing on. But, planning for the high cost of final expenses is one thing that can make that awful time a lot less stressful. Some families are prepared for this expense so they pre-pay for a funeral or save the cash. Others cannot do this, but they may be able to purchase burial policies so they know they will have a way to pay for final expenses.

The Basics Of Burial Policies

This is a simple type of whole life policy that has been developed with the needs of older people in mind. It is usually very easy to apply for. Because the actual death benefit of the policy will be fairly modest, when compared to other types of life policies, the rates may be kept affordable for many families.

The advantage of a burial policy is that it provides cash so the family may spend it however they need to. They can spend the money on the funeral, travel arrangements, or to make up for time that is lost from work. They can also keep any money that is left over.

Bank On Over 50 Discounts

If you are over 50, you may be mising out on simple ways to save money.

Can we boomers really start to save money because of over 50 discounts? While some of us who are turning 50 do not like seeing those senior membership offers show up in the mail, other people are excited about finding ways to bank off their age!

The baby boomer group has always been a large part of the population. Now that boomers are entering midlife and retirement years, some companies want to solicit their business. Some do this by soliciting business with discounts and special offers.

But some of these companies do not openly advertise price breaks for people over 50, over 55, or over 65. They may not want to be viewed as catering to one specific age group. However, you can still get discounts if you know how to ask for them.

Auto Insurance Over 50

I cannot tell you that everybody over 50 years old will qualify for a car insurance discount. Remember that this group could consist of people who are 55 or 85 years old! That is quite a big span. While many insurers find that middle aged people make fewer accident claims, the risk does increase for older seniors.

The easiest way to find price breaks on your coverage would be to shop around. Many web based instant car insurance quote forms make this a simple task.

Retail Discounts for Older People

Many local and national brands offer price breaks for older customers. You just have to walk in and ask for some of these. Others have certain days, like Senior Tuesdays, when they will offer a price break for people over a certain age. You may have to sign up for a free membership card for some offers, while other companies will ask for a driver’s license or just take your word for it.

Note that some national chains let individual local stores decide to offer discounts or not. So just because you got a 15% discount on your breakfast at one restaurant does not mean that the same brand of restaurant will offer it in another location. However, you can usually just ask for these discounts.

Do not be afraid to ask either. The wait staff or clerk may not ask you because, if they are not sure, they will not want to offend you by suggesting you look older than you really are. However, if you do ask them, they are usually quite eager to make sure you get your discount.

You can find these price breaks at a large variety of retail stores and services. They range from auto oil changes to hair salons to toy stores. If you already know you need a service or product, why not arrange your shopping around an over 50 discount? For example, if Senior Tuesdays are common at your local mall, then Tuesday would be a good day to get your shopping done.

Are Over 50 Discounts Worth It?

Saving 10 or 15 percent on some small purchases may not seem like much. However, if you add it all up, you can save hundreds of dollars over the course of a few months. And some larger purchases may even come with price breaks for older people.

The Cost of Long Term Nursing Care

Have you considered the costs of nursing care when planning for retirement? The cost, if this care is received at a nursing home, assisted living facility, or even at home, can add up to thousands of dollars a month. Though it is health care, Medicare only covers short term nursing care. Medicaid, the federal health insurance plan for very low income people, has strict rules to qualify. These rules mean that a covered person must deplete most of their assets.

Many people have trouble considering a future need for nursing care. It seems like something that other people need, or at the least, like something that will only be required far off in the future. However, experts will believe that almost half of the aging population will need exteneded nursing care at some point in their lives. Furthermore, the cost of this care can cost thousands of dollars every month. Most people are not prepared for this.

Ways To Plan For Nursing Care Costs

Should you purchase nursing care insurance? This type of health care policy is one way to plan to cover some of the costs. The product has not been that popular though. This may be because people do not know it even exists, or because the policies come in so many coverage levels that they are confusing to purchase.

If you would like to research various options, you may want to visit here: How Much Does Long Term Care Insurance Cost?

Are there other options? There are other ways to plan for this cost, and some of them may be more attractive to you. Before you purchase anything, you could research long term care insurance alternatives.

Finding The Right Medicare Part D Plan For Your Unique Needs

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage to millions of US seniors and disabled people. There is not just one plan on the market in any area, but usually there are dozens of them. They all come with a variety of coverage levels, drug formularies, and monthly premiums. It can be tough to sort through all of the different options in order to find the best Part D plan for you!

Cheap premiums do not always save money. Premiums vary. Some may cost less than $15 a month, while others may cost over $30. A lower monthly bill may seem attractive, but you must make sure that the drugs you need are covered.

For example, some low cost plans require members to buy medicine at certain chains of stores in order to get the best coverage. If these pharmacies are inconvenient for you, you may have to accept paying more for your drugs at another drug store.

In this case, a better Medicare Prescription plan may cost more but allow a member to choose any drug store.

How To Compare Medicare Part D Plans

There are many factors to consider. You will look at the premium, but also the drug coverage, restrictions, and your final out of pocket costs. This can vary wildly depending upon you own needs for medicine, where you live, and how easy it is for you to travel to pick up your drugs.

The government, Medicare.gov, provides some handy online tools.

Local senior health agents can also be a good resource. You can get quick quotes and plan comparisons, and you can also find contact information for local agents who should be able to listen to your needs and suggest some options. Start Here –> Compare Medicare Part D (RX) Plans

It can be complicated and confusing to sort through all of the Medicare health plans. Millions of US seniors and disabled people are entitled to benefits, but are confused by figuring out the best way to take advanage of it.

While the beneficiaries appreciate getting benefits, they know that the plan will not cover every service. So many seniors and disabled people are interested in finding a plan that can help them maximize their health coverage and control costs.

How can you cut through the confusion?

It is not possible to give everybody one simple answer. There are many individual factors that would influence your decision. You have to figure out your budget, lifestyle, current health status, and of course, the way you prefer to access health services.

One other important thing to note is that available plans will vary by your own location. The Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage plan that your sister is very happy with may not even be on the market in your city or town. Or if it is, the price and covered services may be very different.

So before you start figuring out which plan you should select, you have to understand what you want out of your coverage and how much you can budget for it. Then you need to find out which plans you can enroll in where you live.

Is a Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage plan better?

You also need to understand that MA plans are very different than supplements. A supplement works with original Medicare to cover deductibles and copayments. An MA plan will be used instead of the original plan. I would urge you to make sure you understand how these plans work so you can pick the best one for your own unique needs.

Also note that, all MA plans or supplements are not the same. They come with different coverage options, prices, and out of pocket costs. You may find some health plans that cover almost everything. Some plans may require substantial copayments or deductibles.

Some plans also include some extra benefits, and these are called value added services. You can see that these services can improve the quality of life even if they are not really part of the basic health coverage. Some of these included services can make a big difference. Examples are dental plans, rides to medical appointments, and health club memberships.

Of course, most seniors and disabled people are concerned about the price. Plans that cover services and provide the most flexibility may be very expensive. Lots of seniors and disabled people have to make do on a limited income, so they cannot afford the monthly premiums. Others may come with low, or even no additional premiums. Some of the MA plans even cut the amount that is taken out of social security for a Part B premium.

So you have to balance the price against the coverage. Some people would rather pay more every month for the security that other medical costs can be controlled. Others would rather pay less every month and handle out of pocket costs as they arise.

With so many choices, it may seem very hard to figure out which plan will be better.

One good way to find and compare your choices is to use an online quote system You can enter your basic details, which would include your zip code and age, and then research competitive quotes and plans from the comfort of your home or office.

Are Medicare Supplements better? Should you choose a Medicare Advantage plan instead?

Million of seniors and disabled people rely on Medicare for their health coverage. This US government health insurance plan covers so many people, and it has grown and evolved over the years. Because of its size and its changes, recipients have many choices so they can maximize their benefits to get the best coverage for the least money.

However, with so many choices, it can be confusing to find the best plan for each individual. You may have a lot of questions, but here is one question that is very common.

Is a Medicare Supplement Better Than Medicare Advantage?

This is one question, however, without one right answer. So much depends upon the individual.

If you are trying to decide, you have to look at your own budget, plans on the market in your local area, and of course, the way you like to get your health services! In addition, different areas have different plans on the market. So you also have to figure out which ones are open to people in your state, county, or zip code. Some popular plans are even developed with the needs of peope who suffer from specific health conditions.

This page –> Compare Medicare Health Plans – can help you answer a lot of your questions. You can find out the main differences between different typs of Medicare health plans, and you can also get free quotes for the plans in your own zip code. In addition to online quotes, you can get contact information for local professionals who can answer more of your questions by email, on the phone, or in person!

What Kind of Senior Life Insurance Should You Buy?

The best type of life insurance for you will depend upon your own individual situation. However, if you are looking for a policy for an older person, you have probably seen ads for guaranteed issue life insurance for seniors. This all sounds very attractive, because an older person can apply for a policy, get accepted, and then have it issued quickly and simply.

Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance

However, you should be aware that the “guaranteed” part of this may come with a catch. A lot of times these policies have a waiting period between the time the policy is issued and the time the full death benefit will be paid. If the insured person passes away before this waiting period has expired, the policy may refund premiums or pay a partial death benefit.

Simplified Issue

Many seniors, in reasonably good health, can qualify for an immediate death benefit with a simplified issue life insurance policy. The application will ask a few health question, but many older people in decent health will still qualify.

What Is Right For An Older Person You Know?

If you are looking for a large policy to transfer an estate or a small funeral life insurance policy, just make sure you buy the right one! It is easy to research the different types of policies. Or you can always find a good insurance agent to answer your questions.

The Internet Keeps Brains Active

Well if granma and grandpa are not hooked up to the internet, they should be! UCLA studies have shown that internet use stimulates key brain areas that are associated with complex reasoning and decision making. Surfing the internet can be brain exercise for older people.

But web sites can do more than just keep brains active. Many of them have very valuable functions. Banking sites help people manage their finances. They display account balances for cash accounts, and for debt accounts. Online government websites can help seniors understand their social security and Medicare health benefits. New sites can keep people updated on current politics and issues which affect them.

Social Networks For Seniors

And social networks for seniors can help older people stay in touch with friends and family. They can also help seniors make new friends and contacts. This is really valuable for people with limited mobility, or who do not get outside the house that much anymore. This can really improve mood, and mood can improve overall health! Besides social networking for older people can be a lot of fun.

They can also contribute to the website, which can be very satisfying. Other uses may comment on their posts, and this starts a discussion. It is a great way to stay in touch with friends and the larger world.

No High Tech Skills Required to Surf The Web!

It does not take any high tech skills to surf the web either. If a person can login and send an email, they can use most of the websites. The internet is not just for kids. Older people are enjoying the benefits of browsing online too.

Will The Net Cost Too Much for a Fixed Income?

Almost all of these websites are totally free to participate in. And home PCs are getting a lot cheaper too. I have seen some very functional netbooks and other PCs for around $300. Internet connections can be very inexpensive too, and sometimes you can find senior discounts.

Get Started Online Today

Here is a great place to get started – Health News for Baby Boomers
