In this article we’ll discuss one of the most traditional and historically relevant branches of American Indian art: beadwork. Beadwork of the Native American peoples had and has practical as well as decorative; utilitarian as well as rich symbolic meaning.

Beadwork and making of the beads themselves is a very old craft. Stone, bone and shell beads (such as turquoise and semi-precious stones) are still made the same ancient way. Little affected by modern technology, the making of beads is still carried out in nearly the exact same way as peoples did thousands of years ago.

Sea shell bead pieces are among the most popular and well known pieces of regional trade importance for thousands of years. Nearly everyone has seen American Indian art pieces, from beaded necklaces to purses, belts and such.

For the last several decades modern beadwork has been replicated in oriental factories and very cheaply imported. This makes it a competing factor against the top quality beadwork done by American Indian craftspeople. The native American crafts people have lost several millions of dollars (just over an eight year period during the 1980s) to these fake native beads and beadwork pieces.

Historically, beads were carved from turtle shell, animal horn and deer hooves. These were often used for making rattling or tinkling pieces utilized in dance. Hunters often wore necklaces put together with animal portions, such as bear claws or wolf claws. These indicated a hunter’s prowess. Bones and seeds were often steamed to soften them for stringing and /or bending into various shapes.

As an example of beadwork used for a most practical purpose, the Iroqois League (Haudenosee) used white and purple wampum chains made of fresh-water clam shells to record sacred ceremonies, treaties and songs. This practice was used both before and after the coming of European settlers.

Many types of agreements were recorded with such beadwork chains. They were highly valued and cared for by their owners. European settlers mistook this care and reverence for wampum beads as a sign that the beads held monetary significance. As such, they mistakenly assumed that the word ‘wampum’ referred to money, when in actuality these important beads were much more like very important original documents.

To string beads, Native Americans used animal sinew that is split very fine with which to attach beads to clothing, though infrequently strong plant fibers such as hide thongs or nettle were used for these purposes.

Today, the Navajos as well as some pueblo people still make the ancient bead type called the heishii. This is by far the most popular and high quantity type of beadwork that is still made today as it was in ancient times. These necklaces are also referred to as story necklaces as they can be used to tell stories, with each bead representing a character.

Beads and beadwork are a very important part of archaeological explorations of pre-European history. Beads have survived thousands of years and tell many fascinating stories about times we weren’t around to witness. This is particularly true with respect to beadwork mad of sea shells. Ancient shell beads have been found thousands of miles from seas, which indicates various trade routes and contacts among different groups of people.

Today American Indian artists even create digital beadwork designs to help them make actual beadwork pieces. In this way complex designs and pieces can be tested on the screen before the project is begun. This has certainly added to the creative process for many beadwork artists.

Beadworking weaves through native history both in ancient times as well as in today’s modern computer technology. The most important aspect of beadwork, though, is not what can be sold or gained, but personal pieces that are only given among family and friends. The true meanings behind these pieces are personal associations tied to visions, important perspectives and other things that an individual wishes to be reminded of.

Painting has been defined as the art of applying color, pigment, paint etc on a support base. The manner used to apply on the base is mostly through a brush, which also comes in various sizes and shapes. The domain of paintings includes walls, wood, glass, paper and canvas. The different methods used for painting include oil, water color, pastel acrylic, spray and enamel painting.
Oil painting is done by using pigments and drying oil and in Europe, by using linseed oil. Varnish oil paintings are valued because of their gloss. The progress of oil paintings can be traced back to Northern Europe’s early Netherlands paintings. These paintings gained their epic in the Renaissance period by replacing tempera paintings in a large part of Europe. Famous oil paintings include Deux Soeurs , Mono Lisa and the Avenue of Poplars.
Famous water color paintings include Autumn Flight and Marin Island. Water color paintings are done by using water soluble pigments. Mostly, paper has been used as the support base for water color paintings. However, other mediums like Bark papers, plastics and leather have also been used. In East Asia, water color painting is also referred to as scroll painting. This type of painting has been most dominant and famous in Korea, Japan and China, usually in monochrome browns and blacks. In China, innovation in this type of painting was introduced by the use of fingers instead of brush, leading to the origination of Finger Painting.
Pastel painting refers paintings done by the use of stick as the painting medium, and using binder and pure powered pigments. The binder used is of low saturation and of usually a neutral hue, but the pigments are the same as those used in other types of paintings. A major feature of this type of painting is the color effect provided by the pastels, which is closer to the natural dry pigments than that of any other painting. Careful attention has to be paid towards its preservation, as these paintings are very fragile and can be easily spoiled. That’s why they are sprayed with Fixative and often kept under glass frames.
Another method of painting is Acrylic Painting, which consist of pigments which have been suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion, thus resulting in the paintings drying very quickly. These paintings are water resistant but they can be diluted with water before they are dried. This unique ability of these paintings to be diluted with water, media or pastels helps in giving them a form resembling a water color or oil painting or have its own unique look if they aren’t dieted with any other foreign chemical or medium. The major difference between oil and acrylic paintings is the time it takes for them to dry. Oil takes longer to dry, as it needs more time to blend colors and help in an even glazing over the surface. This slow drying affect of oil helps in the application of various techniques in painting, but is also a tedious factor for some painters.

However, not all molds are equal, and understanding the basic differences between the most common types will help ensure that you choose the right ones for your first candle making project. Fast Pinewood Derby Cars – Polish Them!

While your Pinewood Derby car is racing down the track, the inside of the wheel hubs rub against the axles. This creates a huge amount of friction that even the best lubrication cannot eliminate. So, it is crucial that you polish the axels extremely well.

The purpose of this step is to create a shiny finish on the axle shaft and the inside of the axle head. Anywhere the wheel rubs on the axle must be highly polished in order to reduce friction.

Most folks will tell you to polish you axles with sand paper up to about 2500 grit. That??™s fine for those who want to finish in second place. The axles need to have a near mirror finish in order to eliminate as much friction as possible. To achieve this, you must polish your axles with the use of sandpaper all the way up to 12,000 grit and then finish them off with an ultra fine polishing compound and polishing cloth.

For best results, I recommend the use of the Ultimate Axle Polishing Kit in order to get your axles where they need to be to increase your chances of victory. This system consists of a total of 12 sheets of sandpaper fine from 400 grit to 12,000 grit, one jar of Monkey Jam Premium Axle Polish, one micro-fiber polishing cloth and instructions on how to put a district caliber polish on your Pinewood Derby axles.

Another option is to purchase a set of official BSA Pinewood Derby axles that have been professionally modified by an experienced machine shop. These prefinished Pinewood Derby axles are usually finished up to 3200 grit. Then you can just finish up the polishing process with the finer grit sandpaper. First make sure that your race rules will permit the use of after market axles.

Complete BSA Axle Preparation
1. Straighten axle with the Derby Worx Pro Axle Press.
2. Chuck the axle in a drill press or any electric drill.
3. While the axle is spinning, use a thin flat file to grind off the crimp marks near the axle head.
4. The polishing process will begin with a ????? a strip of 400 grit wet/dry paper. Dip the paper in water and sand the nail and the inside of the nail head while the axle is spinning.
5. Allow the sandpaper to make firm contact with the axle shaft for 10 to 15 seconds.
6. Switch to the next grit strip of dampened wet/dry sandpaper.
7. Continue this process until all grits of sandpaper are used ending with the 12,000 grit paper.
8. Finally, apply the special axle polishing compound with a ????? section of polishing cloth. Polish the axle shaft for about 30 seconds. Make sure to polish the inside portion of the axle head.
9. Remove all polishing compound using a clean, soft cloth.
10. Place the axles in denatured alcohol for about one hour in order make sure all polish residue is removed.

Now, your axles are ready to help your Pinewood Derby car scream down the track. However, before that, you need to polish the inner wheel hub bores. That process is addressed in another article.

Learn How to Make Your Own Candles

Many people over the years have enjoyed making candles. But what has become a creative hobby, and an escape from the everyday troubles of life, was once a way of life. If you have wondered how to make your own candles, chances are you have never considered that this pleasure of today was the way many men, women, and children once made their living. While most of us do not often think back to those times when light switches were merely a dream, that time did exist. And it’s for this very reason that many families were able to make it by creating the only light source of the time: candles. By learning how to make your own candles, you are in essence honoring those that first mastered the art.

How To Make Your Own Candles

Start by ensuring you have all the proper supplies. Wax is of course your number one ingredient. Also you will need wicks, molds, and any fragrances or color dye that you wish to use. All of this can be purchased from local craft stores, or countless online supply stores. Molds can come in several types. Ideally you should purchase inexpensive plastic molds if you are just learning how to make your own candles. It is a safe idea to purchase inexpensive waxes and fragrances as well until you feel you are fluent, enough, at candle making to justify the more expensive materials. You can always upgrade later to more advanced (and expensive) candle making equipment once you have got the basics down and have a fairly good understanding of how to make your own candles.

A double boiler is the standard equipment typically used for melting most candle wax types. If you do not have one you can easily substitute with 2 pots: a large one you’ll fill with water, and a smaller one to place into the larger pot. Your wax must first be melted in the double boiler. You will want to melt the wax to somewhere between 150 – 170 degrees assuming you are starting off with basic paraffin wax. Paraffin wax, the most common candle wax melts faster than some of the specialty waxes like soybean wax (soy wax), palm wax, and beeswax.

When the wax is fully melted you will then need to remove it from the heat and add any additives, fragrance oil, and color dye. Make sure that this is well incorporated into the wax and pour it into a prepared mold with wick inserted. The wax will need to cool for around 5 hours depending on the type used. Placing it in the freezer can accelerate this process. Once it has sufficiently cooled it can then be removed from the mold, and voila! You now have your first candle.

These are the basic steps required for candle making.

If you are serious about learning how to make scented candles, you will not only need to learn the basics of general candle making, but you will also need to learn a thing or two about oils and fragrances such as which ones work best with different waxes and then of course where they can be purchased. Most online and local craft stores will carry the basic candle making supplies, and if you cannot find the exact scent you are looking for, you can always customize by mixing your own. You can purchase fragrances and perfumes in oil, water, and alcohol base but for candle making you should always use oil based fragrances. Since candles are made up of wax containing mostly mineral oil, this works well with oil fragrances as apposed to water based fragrances which will cause problems with your candles performance and leave you with liquid at the top of your candle.

There is not a lot of difference in creating a scented candle verses a non-scented candle, but there is some. There are several types of wax available. The first key to understand how to make a scented candle is to know the waxes. Paraffin is the most popular and readily available wax in the candle making market. Natural waxes such as soy wax and beeswax are more expensive but over the last few years have made a significant presence in the world of candle making and buying. Consumers are becoming more eco friendly and prefer to buy products that are all natural and leave less of a carbon footprint on the environment. Gel candles are made up of oil, just as wax candles are, but also include a resin material. If you chose to make a gel scented candle be sure to follow the directions for producing a high density candle. In a nut shell, high density gel wax holds fragrance well, where low density candles does not.

This is a brief explanation of how to make scented candles.

Once you have decided on a fragrance type and determined the scent in which you are going to go for you want to mix your fragrance oil to the wax. The best time to do this is immediately after removing the wax from the double boiler, or whatever heating source you are using. Slowly mix in the fragrance with your melted wax (1 ounce of fragrance per 1 pound of wax is the general rule of thumb but this will vary based on the type and density of the wax you choose to use). This is one place where more is not necessarily better. The most common mistake made when first learning how to make scented candles is over-scenting. Sure, this may not sound too terrible, and it wouldn’t be if the only problem was that the candle’s scent throw would be exceptionally strong, but that’s not what we’re concerned with here. The biggest problem with over-scenting is that it will adversely affect the candle’s burning performance. This is important, because a poorly performing candle can be a dangerous candle.

The biggest trick to learning how to make scented candles is to take it slow and be sure to test and document your results. By working in smaller batches, slightly varying your fragrance oil/wax proportions between each of them, and then testing and documenting those results you will find that you can quickly fine tune your exact recipe. And once you’ve got it nailed, simply rinse and repeat!
