The headline story on BBC 5 Live on the way to work this Monday morning was: “Government Minister tells people to stop wasting food and ignore best before dates”. Later on in the piece the BBC correspondent showed her ignorance by not knowing the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates. Even making allowances for the fact that it was shortly after 6am in the morning, it was inexcusable to put people in danger of food poisoning who also would not know the difference between these two labels. The British public is ignorant enough about food without the government sowing more confusion. To avoid waste, which was the main message, surely the government should be putting pressure on producers to ensure that the ‘best before’ dates are explained more clearly on the label and that the dates themselves are realistic. Some producers have admitted to me that they deliberately put shorter dates than they need to on their products to encourage sell-through from the retailers. Not helpful!

This was the second ridiculous news story within a week. Last week we had the “organic food is proven not to be more nutritious than non-organic food”. Hello! I thought the point of organic food was that it was grown or made from ingredients that were grown without pesticides. This is why my friends who buy organic do so. It is nothing to do with their thinking the food is more nutritious. Whoever said that? Oh yes – it was the Soil Association! One of their five reasons for buying organic. I support organic farming and food (over 25% of our range is organic), but please let’s get the facts right and encourage people to buy organic food for the right reasons. Please let’s give them the correct information to make the right decisions. Maybe in the face of declining organic sales the Soil Association has felt the need to emphasise the fringe benefits of organic rather than the main benefits.

Finally, I said a couple of weeks ago that I would name and shame the millionaire TV chef who owns a delicatessen currently not paying their suppliers and being taken to court by us. I heard yesterday that we have now won the court case and the full amount of money owed to us plus court costs is now with our solicitors. The money was paid at the very last minute possible – the day before the bailiffs were due to pay a visit to the shop. The delicatessen in question is Cadogan and James in Winchester and the TV Chef is James Martin. Come on James – have a bit of integrity and ensure that your businesses actually pay their suppliers before they have to waste time and money taking them to court. I would love to hear from you.

Anyone who has watched any TV ads recently won’t have failed to notice the current emphasis on birthday celebrations for retailers. Both M & S and Sainsbury’s celebrate significant milestones this year and are spending lots of money telling everybody. The underlying message is “We have been around for years, been through good times and bad, know what we are doing and you can trust us”. They would love you to feel that you can trust them more than some of the young upstarts that have appeared in the retail world within the last decade or so. They would also like you to feel that the products on their shelves are hand-made in the traditional way using natural ingredients, although this sadly isn’t the case.

What has all this got to teach us? Well, there is certainly history and tradition that we can trade on and possibly make more of. Farm shops and delicatessens actually have people working in them that know about the products, how they are made and who makes them. There is often the opportunity to “try before you buy” and that most vital ingredient of all provenance. As I have said previously, there is a lot to learn from the multiples, but at the end of the day most of their products are mass produced by machine. Ours aren’t! Ensure your customers know the stories behind your products if you make them yourselves, or whether you buy them in. Use the wall space with story boards and posters and also shelf-wobblers to tell the story. Invite suppliers in to sample their products on a regular basis and let them tell their story themselves. We have a lot more nostalgia and heritage than M & S and Sainsbury’s, so let’s shout about it!

Cotswold Fayre, my company, is celebrating our 10th birthday this year – and as part of our celebrations we have invited our top customers to Henley Regatta to celebrate next month. Whilst 10 is still young and, to our competitors, we are still the new kids on the block, I don’t see it this way – we were involved in the explosion of fine food at the end of the nineties and have been one of the leading companies in its growth. Since the turn of the millennium, many fine food wholesalers have started within the speciality food world and some of these are still in business!

It has always been the way, new distributors start every year offering lower prices and better service, but the latter of these key factors is often neglected. One of my sales team was bemoaning today that she had lost two of her largest drinks café customers for this summer to a competitor who was offering lower prices and, in effect, hardly making any margin.

My business has never been the cheapest in the market, but we do place a large premium on service, we pay our staff reasonable wages, we spend money on training staff, we have “Investors in People” standard, we have high ethical standards and we have a team of highly experienced sales consultants. Not all these standards are present in some of our newer competitors – and history shows that they may not be around for too long. 10 years old may still be young, but we have 10 years experience of learning from our mistakes and almost all of our original customers from 1999 are still customers today – and will be coming to celebrate with us at Henley in July.

If you read my piece a few weeks ago, you would have read an article on a prospective new supplier who came to me with ridiculous pricing proposal for a potential range of new products that would have meant that our retail customers could have bought the same products cheaper at Tesco’s and Asda.

Well, I am ranting and raving again this week – and in this case, probably more annoyed, because the supplier in question is an existing supplier and the supermarket in question is Waitrose – of all places. The price points in Waitrose, on the whole, are within 5% of the pricing in most independents, which is fine. It is often the case that wholesalers such as ourselves are the first channel to sell to retailers, so new food products are often first seen in the farm shops and food halls of the UK, rather than the multiples where the lead time for taking on new products is longer. Indeed, sometimes we have been selling a range of products for a year or two and then they may be introduced to Waitrose. If the pricing level is maintained, then this often results in our selling more volume to the independents, as their presence in Waitrose can fulfill a marketing function i.e. ABC1 consumers may see the product in Waitrose, but don’t pick it up because they are working from a list, but may buy the product when they have more time and are shopping at a farm shop at the weekend, for example.

Imagine then how angry I was this week upon finding that a product advised to us with a recommended RRP of £3.89 (more for most of our retail customers) I found in my local Waitrose for £2.75. The whole range was priced in a similar way and was not on promotion. The retail price in Waitrose is less than our trade price to our retail customers! This means that the best advice I could give to our retail customers would be to stop buying the products from us and go down to your local Waitrose and fill up your trolley. I haven’t done this yet, the ball is currently on this suppliers side of the court, but unless this situation is resolved, we will be de-listing the range from our next catalogue and I will be publicizing their details in this blog within the next few weeks. I have really had enough of being “used and abused” by suppliers in the speciality food market, who come to me saying that their focus in on the independents and they would love to work with Cotswold Fayre. When I ask them whether they intend to supply the multiples, they claim not to be interested, but this is their agenda from Day 1. Use a few wholesalers to get their product out there, attract the interest of supermarket buyers, and then in effect “screw” the wholesalers, as they have done their job for them. All the investment the wholesaler spends on building the brand in the independents is wasted unless the independents are able to retail competitively.

Having just visited the Garden Centre of the Year, a massive operation near Manchester, this morning I was struck by how well they were merchandising for Father’s Day this weekend. Some Dads I am sure will be more than happy to receive a gift other than socks or a patterned pullover, while any items not sold can just go back on normal display after the weekend.

Anyway this got me thinking on the way back about how little men are marketed to by gourmet food suppliers. Most food (around 80%) is bought by the female (52% of the population), so I suppose that is fair enough. But are we missing a trick by not making more of the male leisure £s that are walking round our retail stores at the weekend. The stats I quoted above are largely for supermarket shopping, but I am sure if someone had the time and money to do the analysis we would find that a much higher percentage of food is bought by males at the farm shops, garden centres and delicatessens of the UK – especially at weekends.

There are some big opportunities this summer to merchandise to men. It is a big summer of sport: it is a home Ashes series, the British Lions are playing and Andy Murray has a good chance at Wimbledon. Men will be inviting their friends round to watch sport – make sure you have plenty of drink and snacking food available. Also these events will be combined with BBQs, especially if the weather continues like this. For some men, this is the only cooking they do during the whole year! Why is it the men that are always in charge of the BBQ? Have you thought of buying in a pallet of charcoal and selling it outside the shop? Why not buy in some BBQ utensils and sell these at the same time?

Being a hands-on dad myself, I long for decent places to take the children, where they can have a good time and I can enjoy a decent coffee. Having something for children to do is a great asset for drawing in Dads, who are longing to feel useful by having the children, but are sometimes at a loss as to what to do with them. Having a small children’s play area – indoors or out, animal’s for them to stroke or even children’s activity sessions or cooking days will be a great draw.

Don’t neglect your male customers!

Over the last few years there has been a lot of talk of local food. Farm shops have opened up selling produce from within a 30 miles radius. Farmers’ Markets have multiplied where only those within a few miles of the market are allowed to participate. Even the supermarkets have jumped on the local bandwagon and have regional buyers looking for regional products. Clearly there is a good trend here, and to ship vegetables from the other side of the world purely on price when there are better (if slightly more expensive) products available on our doorstep is ridiculous. But may I be slightly controversial by suggesting that local isn’t necessarily everything?

Over the years I have seen some shops fail because they have been too restrictive in what they have stocked in their shop. Mrs Bloggin’s pate may be the most local pate available, but if it simply is not very good, or possibly far too expensive, then consumers will vote with their feet and shop elsewhere. This means that the very good local products that are available in the shop aren’t sold either.

It is important that there is a whole offering to the customers of speciality food shops to encourage consumers to shop with you, otherwise they will have to go to another shop to complete their shopping and if short of time may go there for everything. So if there isn’t a local version of a particular product or range of product, don’t let that be a reason for not stocking it.

Food miles aren’t everything! If a local supplier is making a round-trip journey of 50 miles to deliver his or her products to your shop in an old diesel-billowing van, this is a far less green way of getting the goods than via a distribution network or wholesaler. The latter have vans in the area anyway and aren’t making an extra journey to deliver to you. Indeed, there are probably delivering lots of other goods at the same time and are therefore, over a year, saving 1000s of food miles.

Local environment. What is better for the environment? A food producer from the other side of the country, who has a manufacturing process with a carbon-neutral footprint, or a local producer with a large carbon footprint? I’ll leave you to decide, but either way, local isn’t everything!

With more people having access to the internet nowadays, there are larger numbers of people who are searching online for information on particular products that they wish to buy.
One of the best ways you could run a profitable business is to find wholesale sources that would drop-ship these items to your customers when they visit your website looking for information on a particular product. You might also set up auctions of eBay to sell these items.
However, all the wholesale source e-books that you see on the internet, offering you a list of about 10,000 drop-shippers are not all they appear to be. Either the price is too high to make a profit, or they have many links which lead to websites which are active no more, or lead to wholesalers who sell junk items such as dollar store products or as-seen-on-TV items. Most of these wholesalers who find in the e-books are only lists of what we might call ‘middle men’. They buy from the real wholesalers and resell the items to the customers at a higher price in order to make a profit.
The best thing would be to be able to do away with the middle men and find the actual wholesalers of brand name items at prices which will enable you to make a profit. You can do this, but not if you keep depending on the obsolete drop-shippers lists and e-books.
You shall have to find these sources on your own. It might even be as simple as finding a product supplier or manufacturer and asking them whether they will drop-ship the product directly to the customer. Otherwise, you might have to negotiate some kind of a deal to make them drop-ship for you. Whichever way you work this out, you will be able to make a profit as you can get the brand name products which are in demand at a price which is reasonable to you.
If you are wondering how you could find wholesale suppliers, you can find almost all the wholesalers in the United States listed in the Yellow Pages. You should use the ‘Search by Word’ option and type ‘wholesale’ and also select your state from the drop-down box. You could also do a nation-wide search.
http://www.alibaba.com is a website where you can find a lot of sources for products to sell. This website gives you a great chance to find whatever product or brand name you wish to find, as there are suppliers for a wide range of products listed here.
http://www.surplus.net is a website which lists lots of overstock and pallet lots of surplus and refurbished merchandise at reasonable prices. It has lot products listed and at time you can get about a 50%-80% discount on the wholesale price.
http://www.wholesalepages.co.uk lists suppliers from UK and a few other countries. It is an extensive directory with state o the art features and provides quality results for dropshippers, manufacturers, wholesalers, importers, distributors etc
http://www.wholesale-canada.com lists suppliers from Canada
http://www.aidandtrade.com lists dropshippers from USA, UK and Canada
http://www.francewholesalers.com lists suppliers from France
http://www.australiawholesalers.com lists wholesale suppliers located in Australia.

Import and export has made the world a very small place. Nowadays any one can get anything they want, either in shops or over the internet. It is obviously cheaper if you travel and purchase, but you can take benefit of the price difference, only if you decide to purchase in bulk, otherwise it is of no use. At the same time traveling abroad is tiresome and there are language barriers that you have to overcome. People would instead prefer to pay a little more to shop comfortably, and this here the role of exporters and importers come in to play.

Import and export is a business that any one can do. You can even start up an import and export business from your home and enjoy the convenience of flexible work hours. You may have heard that it is difficult to import small quantities, and also about the custom problems. But the fact is that all these information are absolutely wrong!! Yes there are no such difficulties at all. In fact the companies in Hong Kong, China and South Korea will ship you any quantity that you want. Even in the case where a particular company mentions a minimum order, you can order a smaller quantity in the name of sample order! You can order as small a quantity in the name of sample order, and you can also keep re ordering samples. The company will accede to your request as they will be hoping to get a bigger order from you in the future.

Some companies are such that they will ship you small quantities without you having to so through the sample order routine. If you are in this business, then it is a must that you get yourself a computer, almost all the work in this business is done through emails. Also when ever you are corresponding to with them in writing, always use a letter head instead of an ordinary paper; these small things make a lot of difference in creating a good impression.

Email means that you can get all the information that you want in jet speed. Via email you can ask for a quotation and they generally send you a Performa invoice that is an invoice in advance. You have to wire the money electronically which can be easily done through your bank.

Internet has made exporting goods to the small retailers very easy. Even a decade ago, exporting goods to small retailers was an up hill task. The suppliers would be faced with innumerable problems such as difficulty in accepting small payments, expensive communication and lack of information.

With the advent of internet, and free flow information, traders can easily trade across the world and order and sell where ever they please.

William King is the director of Australia Wholesalers and Dropshippers Directory: http://www.australiawholesalers.com , France Wholesalers – French Wholesale Dropshippers & Suppliers Directory: http://www.francewholesalers.com and Pakistan Property & Pakistan Real Estate Properties Portal: http://www.zameen.com .

The number of people who are making a living out of reseller business is increasing significantly these days. There is a sharp increase in the number of people who are now working on an online auction forums such as eBay. It is thus important that in such a business, you have a wholesaler who is reliable and is professional. It is important that the consumers get their goods on time and it is also important that your wholesalers deliver the best quality merchandise.

Most of the resellers rely on the internet to find them the wholesalers. Online drop ship wholesalers understand the working method on the internet and thus are a better choice. Here we have for you 5 tips by which you can find your ideal wholesaler online.

1. Short listing.

Do a simple search of your product with the words drop shipping, drop ship wholesale, wholesale distributors etc, the idea is to use the term wholesaler or dropshipper as prefix or suffix to the product that you want to sell. For example if you are planning to deal in hand phone accessories, then you can type in “hand phone accessories wholesaler” or “hand phone accessories distributor”. This should give you a list of wholesalers. But this not all that you have to do, you should do a simple search of the words wholesalers and drop shippers and read the posts on forums, start checking out the wholesalers who are frequently mentioned.

2. Check out eBay.

Most probably you will find that someone is already selling the items that you are about to sell you can spend some money and order the product from your competitor. This way you can easily trace the manufacturer and make contacts with him.

3. Wholesale directory.

You can find online directories that have done a detailed research on drop ship wholesale retailers. They do their research, conduct interviews and also attend trade shows to search for the potential wholesale dropshippers who can be included in their directories. The advantage that you can avail out of these directories is that you can find out the lowest whole sale process without paying anything extra such as middlemen charges. It is also important that you should realize that not all wholesales are on the net, there are also many others who are not on the list but could prove to be a good wholesaler for your business.

4. Classified ad sites.

You can also search the classified ad sites such as the Craig list and the US Free ads. These are the places where you will find sellers that are selling products. All you need to do is to find a seller who is selling a product similar to the one that you are selling. Incase the seller is selling the product at a cheaper price then there are chances that he has a wholesaler who quotes a lower price. You can order the same product to get hold of the address and the contact number of the dropshipper. You do not always get the number and address of the dropshipper, but most of the dropshipers do include it in as prevention in case the goods are lost in transit.

If you are planning to start off with an online retail business, then dropshipping might just be the right option for you. This business does not require an upfront capital and also involves very little. This is how this business works. In drop shipment the retailer does not stock goods, instead, he advertises the goods and once he has the orders for the customer he places the order to the wholesaler. The amount earned by the retailer is the difference between the wholesale price and the retail price.

This is an absolutely no risk business. You do not have to invest in thousand of stocks and then worry about not being able to sell them. Here you order only when you have got an order, so there is no way that you ca actually have an unsold inventory. It also means that you need no start up capital to start this business; all you need is to advertise a good to create consumer demand.

The other great thing about drop shippers is that they take all the responsibility of shipping and delivering the good. Once you do not have to worry about delivery you can focus all your time and energy in to marketing and advertising the goods. Order shipment is a huge task, there are times when you have to ship thousands of products to the other part of the counter at a very short notice. There are lot of things involved such as packing, insurance and shipment. These activities are indeed very taxing and time consuming but here all these jobs will be look after by the drop shipper and you can easily save all the valuable time and invest it in expanding your business.

In this business, you can also save all the warehousing expenses as you order only when you actually receive an order from the customer and as such you do not need a stock of ready goods. In this way you do not need a ware house to stock the goods. If you think of a normal retail business, you will find that you will need to estimate the demands of the consumer and then stock the inventory likewise. In this case you have to pay the rent of the warehouse and this rent steals a chunk of your profit.

In the case of dropshipping there is a limit to the number of products that you can sell. As you do not have to invest in the stock and you do not need to block any capital there is no harm in advertising an array of products on your website as long as the products are all related and fall in to the category of products that you sell.

The most important thing is to be absolutely sure that you are doing something that you truly want to do. To know this for sure you have to ask yourself a simple question, why do you want to do it? Is it because you would like working with other manufacturers and dealers? Or is it because you think it is an easy way to mint money?

Wholesale business like any other business is very demanding. It requires that you put in a lot of effort and also a great amount of up front capital. It requires that you have great customer skills and adequate knowledge about warehousing and logistic planning. You will be playing a role of a mediator between the suppliers and the retailers. You will have to ship tons of goods across the country at a moment notices, it is important that you do not lose your nerve in such situations. It is also important to know that the payment that you will receive from the retailers will be on a Net10 or a Net 30 basis, often the retailers will pay you after the goods have been delivered, but what if after the goods are delivered the retailer refuse to pay? Or he goes bankrupt? You can face these situations once you plunge in to the business. So it is very important that you take all the precautions and you are prepared to meet the consequence.

It is important for you to assess the degree of competition before plunging in this field. If there are reliable wholesalers in the locality the retailers would not want to shift from their regular supply for a new wholesaler. It is prudent to do certain research through the internet and also through the retailer themselves and find out if there is scope for your business to flourish.

You should assess your financial status before taking any step further. Wholesale business requires that you buy goods in large quantity from the wholesalers. It also means that you have to sell to the retailers on credit as they will be paying you after 30 days of receipt of goods. You have to invest a lot of money in insuring the goods and also in the shipping and transport of goods.

You need a secure business plan to ensure that your business is a success. You should have a clear plan of what you want to do and how you want to go about doing it. This will not only be beneficial for you but it is also a requirement for the banks in order to sanction the loan that is proposed by you. It is also advisable that you take the help of a business lawyer from whom you can take professional advice.

Lastly it is important that you apply for license, taxing certificates and complete other paper works. Paying taxes is a certainty and it is no time deferring it. You should start planning for your tax payment to the state and the federal government and for this there is a lot of paper work that you must do.
