Summer Youth Employment Program is a Win-Win

Local Businesses and Youth Alike Benefit from Summer Program
October 2009 If you want to know how intractable the unemployment problem is in Detroit, talk to any group of 18 – 24-year-olds and you’ll be amazed at how few have ever had a summer job.

That’s why McDonald’s owner and operator, Jamar Thrower, decided that the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.

“We are always open to getting involved in anything positive to help the community,” said the owner of Jamjomar, Inc. “This was an unbelievable chance for us to train young people at no cost to us, then have them ready to hire when the summer was over.”

Thrower is one of dozens of for-profit employers who participated in SYEP this summer. The Detroit program, which serves an average of 2,500 youth each year, received an injection of $11.2 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act this summer. The federal money helped increase the scope of the program to serve about 7,000 youth ages 14 – 24.

SYEP Participation is Good for Business

With the drastic increase in the number of youth served, City Connect Detroit, acting on behalf of the Detroit Youth Employment Consortium, decided to enlist the help of the business community in addition to the traditional non-profit supporters of the summer program. It was not an easy sell.

“In a troubled economic climate, many businesses were focused on downsizing, not making room for new employees,” said City Connect Detroit CEO Geneva J. Williams. “But when we made it clear that we were providing the youth and paying their salaries, many businesses jumped at the chance to give young people a taste of the real work environment.”

Thrower employed 13 youth in his two Detroit stores. “In such a depressed time, it’s important to expose kids to earning a paycheck and to teach them accountability,” said Thrower, who trained his SYEP youth in all aspects of running his business. “It was such a good experience for me as the employer, I would have no trouble recommending that other stores in our consortium participate next year.”

Cultivating Future Employees

C. has a bad temper-one that landed her in front of a judge earlier this year after the 20-year-old stabbed someone in a fight. The judge gave the first-time offender a choice: Go on probation and get a job, or go to jail.

“I picked probation,” she said. “I’m so glad I was given a chance.”

C. ended up in SYEP doing conservation work with the Greening of Detroit. ”This is my first time having a job,” she said while composting at Elizabeth Gordon Sachs Park near downtown Detroit. “It feels good to have a paycheck.”
The biggest lesson she’s learned is how to stay to herself. “You get quiet when you do work outside,” she said. “At first it was uncomfortable being quiet and thinking. But it helps me stay out of trouble.”

It’s a Question of Values

Exposing youth to environmental issues, plus giving them chance to learn the value of hard work is exactly why Johnson Controls, a member of the Detroit Youth Employment Consortium, got involved with SYEP.

In 2006, the Milwaukee-based company began its Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) to teach urban youth environmental stewardship and leadership. The program has since expanded to two other cities where the company has operations: Baltimore and Detroit.

“We had 2,200 applicants for 110 positions in Detroit this summer,” said Jennifer Mattes, director of global public affairs. “We continue to search for additional funding sources in all three cities – the need is so great.”

In partnership with the national Student Conservation Association and the Greening of Detroit, the CLC was able to give Detroit youth a taste of the green job industry, including educating city residents about energy efficiency; weatherizing and energy auditing 75 homes in Detroit; designing and building an outdoor classroom and indoor environmental lab at Barbara Jordan Elementary School; conducting an extensive tree inventory; and reclaiming two green picnic shelters on Belle Isle using alternative building materials and practices.

Why did Johnson Controls get involved with summer youth programs?

“We wanted to invest in the communities where we do business,” said Mattes. “It’s about challenging the next generation to be environmental stewards and providing them the opportunity to gain leadership skills. Some of them may even become our employees. The program also helped Johnson Controls develop a relationship with state and local leaders. “The mayor and the governor are supportive of these summer programs as well,” said Mattes. “We’ve earned recognition as a company that’s engaging youth in a unique and meaningful employment experience that also provides a valuable community service.”
Mattes said that SYEP is a win-win for the business community. “Through the program, we can give youth a perspective of what kinds of skills and education they will need to be ready for the green jobs of the future,” she said. “At same time, they’re doing something to beautify their city. We want to make it a better place for everyone.”

Just 10 short years ago, Internet users weren’t using search engines very often, but favored index sites like Yahoo!, and for good reason. Index sites generally had human editors that chose websites based on topic and posted them in a hierarchical way where there were main categories and sub categories that got more specific. For example, under the heading “Arts and Humanities,” were more subtopics like “Artists, Art History, Visual Arts” and more. When users clicked on any of these subtopics, they would see even more subtopics. The directory of sites by topic allowed the user to find the exact topics they wanted and verity, with the help of human editors, that those pages contained good information. The sites listed were usually reliably accurate in regards to what the user was seeking and still exist to this day.

On the other hand, search engine technology was far behind today’s standards ten years ago. By using older search engines, users would likely come up with search results unrelated to their keywords. Back then, the technology hadn’t evolved to accurately find and filter search engine results. By simply using some shady techniques, a webmaster could get his or her site displayed for totally unrelated keywords. For example, a site selling herbal supplements might be able to get their site to show up in search engines under search terms unrelated like “education” or “home mortgage.” The result was that search engines were fairly unreliable and not as many people used them. Today more than 85% of web users use search engines to find the pages they want.

Currently there are several ways in which users can find the web pages they want to view:
·   First, they can use search engines. More than eighty-five percent of web surfers use this method in order to find what they’re looking for.
·   Users can go to websites they’ve heard about on TV, radio, and print advertising. Examples include traditional advertising that lists a website as part of normal advertising, like listing fedex.com in a Fed Ex ad. Another example is an advertisement for a specific website like Monster.com or eHarmony.com.
·   Users can click on ads they see online. Many sites display advertising on them, and users can follow those ads to find the sites they want to visit.
·   Users can find websites they learned about from viral marketing techniques, a topic that will be discussed in greater detail in a later chapter. This includes links that have been sent to users by a friend or recommended by someone they know, like word of mouth advertising.

Signs are everywhere! The world is filled with signs of all sorts and sizes and no matter where you go you are bound to run into a sign of one sort or another. Whether they are traffic signs, open signs, or name signs there are signs all around us that seek to convey some sort of information to us. They are an important part of the modern world and things would be a little more dangerous and confusing if it was not for the presence. But while there are many different signs, not all of them are as effective as they would like to be.

An effective sign has to be visible, eye-catching and informative all at the same time. That is a pretty tall order when you consider that most people filter out anything that does not currently fit into their frame of reference. Most signs use three things to help get their message across to the people that they need to inform. These three things are shape, color, and message. When used together correctly they can turn ordinary open signs into signs that not only tell you a place is open but literally seems to draw you into the doors at the same time.

Shape is most evident when you look at traffic signs. The specific shapes of the various signs are important in two ways. In the first instance they make it easy to remember a sign. Many people think of a stop sign when they see an octagon even if the sign is not red or does not have the word â€˜STOPâ€™ painted on it. Shapes also help to draw more attention. Most traffic signs use a triangle with the point either up or down. People become used to the one configuration so when they see the opposite, they stop and pay attention. While mostly used by traffic signs, even open signs and name signs can use different shapes to attract attention.

Color and information are linked with many signs. Open signs, for example, convey the simple information that the place of business is open. Some do with simple coloring and lettering, but others can use interesting coloring and lettering to draw attention to the fact. Color can also help to suggest the importance of a sign. Bright colors are usually considered more important like the red stop sign, while cooler colors are more informative and is not considered to be necessary information like a blue handicapped parking sign. The use of words versus pictures is also important. While words can convey more information, pictures can sometimes communicate faster than words.

From open signs to traffic signs, signs are a part of the world we live in today. We use them to get around, to find out where we are, and to figure out what we need to be doing. Their shape, color, and information all play a role in whether we heed them or ignore them. Whether they warn us about traffic, try to advertise or simply seek to tell us where the restrooms are, signs are very important.

Networking for Business Success

I am writing this week’s blog in a slight alcoholic haze after celebrating my gourmet food company’s 10th birthday yesterday at Henley Regatta together with around 30 of our top customers. It was a fantastic day, roasting hot, most of them had never been to the Regatta before, so it was a real treat. We had farm shops, delicatessens, garden centres and food halls represented and we even watched the odd boat race alongside the Cotswold Fayre magician.

One thing to come out of the day was the valuable opportunity that these business owners and managers had to network with others in similar lines of business. One actually asked us to arrange a similar event every year, which next time they would be happy to pay for, and call it the “Cotswold Fayre Networking Event”. Now that comment may have been induced by too many glasses of Pimm’s but it was very clear that not enough of this kind of opportunity is present in the speciality food world. We all tend to be so busy, working all hours, dealing with crises etc… Sure, we attend trade events such as Food Shows where they are others there, but don’t really have the opportunity to pick each other’s brains about current issues.

It really is essential to steal ideas off others, and even learn from their experience of getting it wrong, before we try something similar in our businesses. That is one of the main motivations of my writing this blog every week. I am desperate for the success of the independent food halls, farm shops and delicatessens in the UK. I am even more desperate to stop the onward march to world domination of Tesco and Asda. It is all too easy to get stuck in the mundane tasks of the day to day without getting our periscopes up and looking out to the future and adapting our business to the very rapidly changing communities around us.

Sheridan & Co Retail Design Agency have created a commercial for edgy cosmetics brand Urban Decay. The commercial will be aired on Thomson holiday flights this summer.

Sheridan’s creative team led by Steve Thomas art directed the commercial for Urban Decay which stars world renowned makeup artist and Urban Decay’s worldwide retail director Eric Jimenez.

It marks the conclusion of an impressive and highly original creative campaign, mobilizing in-house specialists and creative designers to produce the televisual advertisement.

“My favourite thing about Urban Decay is the glitter. Most women look amazing with a little sparkle on. And it’s the easiest way to achieve a glam look without overdoing it” says Eric Jimenez.

With the product due to be available on the flight itself, it signifies a unique shift in product placement and advertisers, testing Urban Decay’s new line in the skies.

Urban Decay have been on the forefront in pioneering a new, sassy, punky and edgy aesthetic for female cosmetics. Having worked with Sheridan and Co Retail Design Agency on their award-winning point of purchase display stalls and cabinets, the creative partnership has now extended to the air.

Sheridan & Co Retail Design Agency helped develop the script for the commercial with Eric and brand agents Alex Shafii and Paola Schmid. In addition to Eric’s footage the film features graphic information screens and an animated version of Urban Decay’s Ammo Pattern all created by Sheridan & Co.
