Television is the greatest invention of the twentieth century and has revolutionized our world. Television, or TV for short, has been commercially available since the 1930′s and is a telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images usually accompanied by sound. Historically, TV existed in only black and white, but today we have color programming. TV’s have come a long way from the primitive black and white variety. HD (high definition) TV is the latest advance which gives a crystal clear picture with true to life colors. We’ll first discuss programming, the types of shows available, and then some advantages of TV. Let’s see what television has to offer.
To start, the magic of TV lies in the programming. One can find a channel with programs dedicated to nearly every subject. There are news programs, sports, soap operas, dramas, cooking shows, and much more. Worldwide, TV is funded by either the government, advertising, licensing, subscription, or any combination of these things. Subscription channels, such as HBO and Showtime, are protected so only those who pay for the subscription are able to view the programming.
One genre of programming that has become extremely popular, and is cheap to produce, is reality TV. This genre involves average people living their lives on TV. Usually, reality TV involves some type of game or contest where the participants compete in front of the cameras for some type of reward, which is usually monetary. It’s extremely popular with audiences because the viewers can relate to those on screen. There is a reality TV program for every type of viewer. Some popular shows are Survivor, The Biggest Loser, Top Chef, The Bachelor, The Hills, American Idol, and many more. Reality TV shows almost always take one of the prime time slots due to their popularity. Many of the popular ones are free and do not require a cable subscription.
Next, let’s move on to cable TV. For a monthly fee, one can subscribe to a large selection of channels. In some markets, one can subscribe to a feature called on-demand or pay-per-view. This allows the viewer to watch a program of his or her choice when it is most convenient. Many cable companies offer movies and other specialty programming for a small fee. TV has become increasingly convenient in recent years. Another feature of TV which makes it convenient is something called DVR, or digital video recorders. DVR allows the viewer to record programs onto a hard disk automatically based on what they’ve set up in advance. This is great for viewers who like to record the same program every day, those who like to have a variety of programming, and those who aren’t available to watch a program at its original air time.
Finally, TV has made the world accessible to millions of people through the touch of a button. One can go on an African Safari, see the Grand Canyon, ski the Alps, and dive in the deep blue sea all from the comfort of their living room. The world has never been experienced like this before. TV is an invention which is much appreciated and will be around for years to come.
