Does Article Marketing Still Work?
You bet article marketing still works. Of course, I have seen the debates. Some online business people submit one or two articles to one directory and wonder why their business has not exploded. Some others have submitted dozens of articles and have not seen much good traffic come from them.
But I believe these people are making a few mistakes when they submit their articles, and if they could fix these simple things, they would have great results with article marketing! Understand that writing for the internet is not the same as writing a novel, essay, or academic article. You need to study effective article writing and article submission techniques, and then come up with a system that works for you!
Common Article Marketing Mistakes
- Internet surfers have short attention spans. Write short blocks of texts and make use of subheadings and lists (like this one!).
- Pay attention to the keywords in your title. The title is the part of your article that will be likely to be picked up by search engines, so try to do some research on common seearches.
- Categories and Tags. Your category should be carefully selected. Make sure it is the best fit for your article. Some article directories also let you apply “tags”, and you should pay attention to those too. Tags, are like additional categories, and I think they should be kept short and general, but that is my opinion.
- Write Attractive Titles Too. Also try to balance keywords in your title, with having a title that will catch a web surfer’s attention.
- Read up on copy writing. You can find lots of free resources on the internet about internet copy writing, and an investment in a good book on the subject will probably pay you back many times.
- Craft your Anchor Text (Link Back Text). You have a place to include a text link back to your own website, or a page on your website. You also need to pay attention to the text you use in that link. Search engines pick up on that text for indexing too, and it should match the type of keywords you’d like to be found on when searchers look for a service like you.
- Why Be Dull? Write about something that is interesting to many potential consumers, or that solves a problem for a niche you want to target. Have the information lead into a reason that the readers of your article will benefit by visiting your website for more information. You have used your article to grab their attention, inform them, but also to pre-sell them on whatever it is you are promoting!
- Keep it up! I did not start an online business by writing one article, and I do not keep my business going by resting. In the very competitive niches I tend to work in, I am constantly looking for ideas for new articles so I can promote my website. I also create versions of my websites that can be submitted to multiple article directories.
- Use your time wisely. I started out by submitting all of my own articles. That is great. And I still submit many of my own articles, especially to the bigger and more important article websites. But I also use services and software to help me create versions (spin) articles, and to do massive article submissions. Keep in mind though, that more is NOT always better. A very well crafted article, submitted the right way to the right place, can be much more effective than 100 badly spun versions submitted to every article directory on the internet.
- Find a balance, see what works for you, and then repeat it! Always check your results, tune your efforts, and try to go with the system that produces the highest return on your effort and/or investment.
