What is Social Media?

Social websites are websites where the users create most of the content. If you spend any time on the internet, you have probably seen or joined websites like Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter. Of course, tthese websites are great ways to connect with old friends, or keep in touch with your current friends and family. But did you know that they can also help you grow your online visitor base?

How Does Social Media Help Companies?

When you use social websites, you establish a network of friends, business contacts, and family. Some people have a dozen or so “friends”, while others have 100’s or 1000’s of connections. When you publish your own contributions, people in your network get notified, and if they are interested, they check it out!

Now in the old days, word of mouth was one of the most effective methods of promoting a service or product. This is simply the 21st century version of word of mouth marketing. How much better will your promotions be when visitors already have some sort of connection with you through a social network!

Using Social Networking Effectively

Now, you may want to keep distinct personal and business acounts. Your best friend, cousin, or the guy from your day job may not want to see all of your business promotions. Sometimes I promote a new project with my personal accounts, but I do it sparingly. What I do is to create a seperate “business” account, and then sometimes even “friend myself’. Of course, I do get accused my friends of having a split personality, but that’s the way it is sometimes.

Then I sparingly bring up the best articles from my business into my personal accounts…. but the business account is used to write about my business, keeping some distance from personal accounts.

Does Social Media Marketing Work?

You bet. A link on social media does attract attention, sometimes help build search engine backlinks, and brings in a flow of people who were interested enough to click!
