How To Handle A Job Loss
So many people are losing their jobs these days that it is no longer a stigma if you get laid off. As a matter of fact many experts say “A majority of people will tell you it is the best thing that ever happened to them.” Many people are so afraid to leave their jobs that they stay in jobs they hate and are really miserable. Here some quick tips to smooth the transition from job holder to job seeker:
Shed the negative stuff - Write an angry letter to your boss. Scrunch it up, stomp on it a few times and then rip it up. Take some time off if you can to get some distance and perspective from the loss. You want to be able to appear positive when you interview and not be bogged down by old resentments.
Make a plan – If you want to try a new field, investigate training programs. Consider the possibility of making a career change. Now is your chance to look at all your options. Make a list of your options and how you will go about finding out about them.
Update your resume - Have several people read it over to make sure it is easy to read and highlights your accomplishments. If you know someone in human resources get them to read it and point out any red flags.
Network – Experts say over 50 percent of the jobs out there are found through networking. Talk to friends, family, former colleagues and use online sources like LinkedIn.com.
