My medical career and experience began when I founded and ran a Gasterenterology practice and helped thousands of patients over a career spanning decades. While in practice, I began to write patient education articles in the field of gastroenterology including many on diets, diseases, drugs and procedures. All of this material - over 1,000 pages - was placed on my practice web site at gicare.com and became one of the most popular and frequently visited medical practice web sites on the internet. I then retired. But it continued to nag at me that I still had so much more to say. In other words, I found retirement a complete failure! I found myself researching more and more into the food fiber and prebiotics fields and the increase in GI diseases of Western civilization - diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and colon polyps and cancer. Many years ago in medical school, there was not much to teach about the colon. We knew it was filled with bacteria, perhaps 300-400 types. The liquid stool entered it from the small intestine.
